“Okay, so apparently I can’t say my own son’s name correctly today.” -Umm… uhh… Elizabeth

Side effects of becoming a parent can include periodically being unable to properly pronounce or remember the names of your own children, spouse, famous celebrities, the President, and in extreme cases, your own name.

Sometimes it happens. It’s better that it does than it doesn’t. I guess.

  • Having a son with the name William I can’t help but sometimes pronounce my son’s name “Will-I-Am”

  • My two are lucky if I ever get their names right. One of them is called Hester, Hetty for short. I often land up at Hesty. Then I go with Hetter. Then I give up and go with the oft cited “You, yes you there, whatever your name is.”
And I call the other one, whose name is Isla (ie like the Scottish island, and like Isla Fisher)- Mairi, which is my sister’s name and not even remotely the same.

I know, I know. Who can say.

I often call my son, Christopher, by my brother’s name, Nic which really terrifies me sometimes.

My mother had 5 children (Brian, Patrick, Kaela, Christopher, and me). She would call us by her brothers and sisters names (Mike, Tony, Patty, or Terry), but more often, we are Tom, Fred, or Henry. I never understood how she could confuse us, as we are all so different and have different names. Then I had my third child and all hell broke loose. I often switch my daughters names around (Lorelei and Genevieve) much to the point that its a running joke between Lorelei and I to just call each other “George”. When Genevieve was a new born, I would swap Lorelei’s name with Nicholas’ (my son and the oldest) to the point that I just referred to them as “brother” and “sissy”. These are now their names, lol.

Show me WHERE in the owner’s manual is says that we MUST get their names right??? Yeah….I thought so.

  • Youngest of 3 here. Brian and Denis are older brothers… when your Dad is trying to get your attention, but can’t get the right name with your face, and he speaks too quickly… “Brian Denis Nik” becomes, that’s right, you guessed it (no you didn’t)… “Bird Dick.” *sigh* Even my Dad calls me Dick.

    Chin up Finnigininin. ๐Ÿ˜‰

In my house we go down every male name in the family until we get it right. *No Shame of Mommy Brain*

For added fun, act like she still got it wrong when she finally gets it right. The resulting discussion will be sure to give you great material for future blog posts. It’s also a health tip. Arguing burns calories.

I’ve got three girls, and there was one afternoon (recently…last week, I think) that I went through two wrong names, gave up, and said, “You! With the face!”

    She giggled.

It did not bode well for the moment, which required some level of parental sternness. Obviously, not much, and my youngest proceeded to do what I needed her to do.

For some reason I am always calling my daughter(Hannah) Shannon(my sister)… no clue why?!?! It is a mystery to me. Just thought I’d share… ๐Ÿ˜‰ xo

  • Leyla says:

I have no children of my own (yet), but my dad always calls my brother (Timmy) Inge (my uncle on my dad’s side), and he switches my name with my sister’s all the time. I’ve been called all female names of our relatives, and once even Stephany, and I’ve no idea where that came from.. Appearantly my name is the hardest to remember, and this post has made me less sad about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Also, love the use of the word herd, in one of the comments, made me giggle. ^^
