She was misty-eyed and exhausted in my arms. I was sitting there listening, occasionally making quiet, encouraging sounds that said I understood and felt for what she was feeling.
When she said that she didn’t used to be high-maintenance, we were both quiet for a moment before chuckling at what she’d said. I could tell she was feeling better, and though I knew she really only wanted patient ears right then and not pep-talkling lips, I risked saying something.
I told her she wasn’t “high-maintenance”… she was a mom.
